Baxter State ParkWilderness · Maine
Organization

A three-person Authority, 70 staff, and four advisory committees.

The park is separately administered, free from any connection with the larger State Park system. Its governance structure is compact and deliberate, and, like the park, quite old.

Three members, established in 1939.

"The Baxter State Park Authority... has full power in the control and management of the Park."

Ex officio member of the Baxter State Park Authority.

  • Judy Camuso

Commissioner, Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife

Ex officio member of the Baxter State Park Authority.

  • Patty Cormier

    Director, Maine Forest Service

Ex officio member of the Baxter State Park Authority.

  • Director of Administrative Services

    Finance and operations

Leads finance, HR, reservations, and administrative systems.

  • Natural Resource Director

    Science and stewardship

Leads the park’s natural resource program, including trail ecology and research coordination.

The park employs roughly 70 staff across the year, about two-thirds of whom are seasonal. See the employment page for open positions.

Four volunteer bodies, each with a narrow mandate.

All committees are composed of individuals with either deep park experience or specific technical expertise.

Forestry and ecology specialists advising on the Scientific Forest Management Area.

  • Baxter Park Research Committee

  • Baxter Park Investment Committee
